Globe Telecom’s ‘Data for Good’: Transforming Lives Through Analytics and Innovation
Globe Telecom, a leading telecommunications provider in the Philippines, operates one of the country's largest and most advanced mobile, fixed-line, and broadband networks.
By leveraging Cloudera's capabilities, Globe built a hybrid cloud system that processes massive real-time network signal data alongside batch data from billing and payment systems.
This robust infrastructure enables Globe to manage data effectively, uncover meaningful analytics, and deliver personalized experiences that enhance customer satisfaction.
With Cloudera as one of its capabilities, Globe also uses data and analytics to drive its 'Data for Good' initiatives, empowering communities and shaping the next generation of industry leaders.
Bridging Education and Industry
One of Globe’s flagship programs connects academic institutions with the power of data and analytics. Through partnerships with nearly 20 universities, including Ateneo de Manila University, De La Salle University, University of the Philippines, and Mapúa University, Globe has reached close to 2,000 students. The program supports universities by enriching data science curricula, hosting hackathons, offering webinars, and connecting students with industry experts to equip them with the latest, industry-relevant skills.
In 2024 alone, Globe held about 17 webinars and speaking engagements on topics such as analytics, generative AI, business intelligence, and FinOps. This initiative equips and prepares graduates with the knowledge they need to excel in a rapidly evolving digital landscape.
Building a Community of Data and Analytics Practice
Globe fosters a culture of collaboration and innovation through its Data and Analytics Community of Practice (DACOP), which unites 1,000 members across 15 business units. The community shares insights and best practices on data management, infrastructure, advanced analytics, and AI through interactive sessions.
DACOP hosted over 35 meetups and events in 2024, creating a space for tackling challenges, exploring trends, and driving continuous learning. This vibrant community keeps Globe at the forefront of data and analytics innovation.
Training Future Data Scientists
Globe’s Data Science Program (DSP), a 10-month intensive training initiative, develops skilled data scientists and business analysts. The program provides hands-on learning, including immersion exercises, analytics challenges, and capstone projects powered by insights from over 50 data sources.
Since its inception in 2019, DSP has trained 59 cadets across five batches. These graduates have been deployed within Globe and the Ayala Group, contributing to critical projects in data analysis, model development, data engineering, and stewardship.
Extending Impact Through Partnerships
In addition to its flagship programs, Globe collaborates with NGOs and private sectors to expand its mission of using data and analytics for good. These partnerships amplify Globe’s efforts to drive meaningful change, supporting various causes from disaster preparedness to education access.
Jennifer Echevarria, VP of Enterprise Data and Strategic Services, shared her thoughts on the impact of their Data for Good initiatives.
“Working with Cloudera, we’re not just improving our services; we’re making a real difference in the industry. We’re helping new graduates get a headstart, upskilling students, and sharing best practices to spark innovation and build a culture of continuous growth.”
These collaborations are more than just partnerships. They’re about finding creative solutions to some of society’s biggest challenges. They stand as proof that data and analytics can be a powerful force for good, reaching far beyond business goals.
Through its Data for Good initiatives, Globe demonstrates how technology and analytics can fuel innovation, empower communities, and create a positive impact on society.
